...DOES NOT keep the doctors away.
Last Thursday I was in the mood for a little snack, so I did what I always do and headed for our stash of brownies. Just as I was about to take a bite, I thought that I would eat a healthy snack for a change. I have never really liked apples, but since they are so convenient I decided to eat an apple instead.
Four hours later I was in the ER and admitted to the hospital. Apparently the apple tore a hole in my esophagus. I had to stay in the hospital for 5 days! The danger was that the hole can leak bacteria into the sterile part of your body and affect your heart and vital organs. There is a 50/50 fatality rate for this type of injury. This was a random freak accident. All of the doctors and nurses said that they have never heard of this type of injury occurring from food, especially an apple. After 3 straight days of not being able to eat or drink anything (incredibly difficult for a nursing mother), 3 cat scans, 3 x-rays, an EKG, allergic reactions to narcotics, endless check ups and monitoring and 5 long days at the hospital, my esophagus had healed itself, and I was able to come home. I am extremely blessed that things have turned out the way that they did. It has basically been a best case scenario. I am not dead, and I did not end up needing some long and complicated surgery.
Moral of the story? That will teach me to try and be healthy! I think that I will give up on apples, and stick to my brownies. After all, besides tasting delicious and adding a couple extra pounds...what have brownies ever done to me?
Alec's Boot Camp
While I was in the hospital, I was not able to nurse Alec due to the medications in my system. My mom and sister flew in to help. Their mission was to get our little guy to take formula and to eat some food. Their strategy was to buy every type of baby food.
Alec's Buffet
Doesn't this look delicious? How in the world could he resist?
He actually took some formula. While it was soy formula, and he only took 7 oz in 4 days...he still took it. I think that the best part was that he would only take it through a syringe. We have some really funny video footage, but I still have not figured out how to get it onto the blog.

We are so grateful for all the help that we received with Alec! From the Relief Society and from my mom and sister Kim who booked last minute flights to come out. Alec and I had not been away from each other for longer than 4 hours, so we are both excited to be reunited and back to our normal routine! We both have lost quite a bit of weight, so I think that for the next few days we will just enjoy snuggling and eating some yummy food together.
Oh my gosh!!! I CANNOT BELIEVE THAT! That's so crazy! I've never even heard that. Makes me want to stay away from apples too.
